I’d seen a fair few 19th century Staffordshire mugs that touted good behaviour and reminded the drinker to keep themselves on the straight and narrow. The “Idleness brings disgrace” mug that this jar revolts against (better late than never, eh?), was meant for a child. I cannot think of many things more necessary for any growing mind and body than idleness – not the switching off and blind gobbling of mindless slop, but the beautiful tedium of a long afternoon that challenges you to be as alive and present as you can be, without any expectations of productivity. Idleness allows you to form your own rules, lest you end up spending your life playing someone else’s game.
